Anytime you visit any kind of a doctor you hope that they practice cleanliness. A dentist is no different. How do you know your dentist is providing you with a clean environment while they work on your teeth?

The first way you can tell is to check the location of the dentist. Make sure they are not near or next to business that could cross contaminate the dentistary they are next to.

Next you can call you dentist and ask them to explain some techniques they use to ensure they have the cleanest environment possible. Any dentist or assistant should be more than happy to answer a few questions regarding their practice. If not, they may be too busy to do much more than clean properly.

The best way to check up on the cleanliness of your dentist is to visit and ask to have a look a round the place. You will want to keep the tour quick since most dental practices tend to be very busy. Look around the place to make sure tools are put up, trash cans are emptied. A clean dentist is an organized dentist. They should be proud of their practice and want to show you around.

Be sure to be courteous and kind when you ask to do some of the things mentioned above.

It is up to you some to make sure you put t your teeth and your families in good and clean hands.

One of the qualities that a good dentist has that you might not find at other dental practices is the fact that a good dentist is going to explain things thoroughly to you. This means that the dentist is going to take the time to really talk to you about your teeth and your mouth, and about what’s going on in there. You want to have a dentist who is going to take the time that it will take to explain to you what’s going on, and to talk to you about the things that you need to know about your dental needs. A good dentist isn’t going to just skim over the things that need to be done, he or she is going to sit down and talk to you about the various things that you’ll need to have done at the practice. A good dentist is going to make sure that you know about what needs to be done, and is going to help you make sure that no matter what happens, you are always going to be informed about your options.

Informing you of your options is another thing that a good dentist is going to do for you that other dentists might not do. You are probably going to have many different options when it comes to caring for your teeth and doing other dental work, and a good dentist will take the time to talk to you about these various options and what they might mean for you. If a dentist is a good one, they are going to sit down with you and run through these options, telling you what procedures will be like for various things, how you will feel, and what type of recuperation there will be for each procedure. A good dentist is going to take the time that it requires to talk about these various things, because they care about you and they care about each of the procedures that you need to have done.

Also, a good dentist isn’t going to push other things on you without an explanation or without telling you why you need things. Whenever you need a service, a good dentist is going to make sure that you know why you need the service, and what the service is going to be.

Lastly, a good dentist isn’t going to shy away from telling you when you need to have work done that he or she can’t do on their own. Even if this means doing other things or sending you to another clinic, a good dentist is going to help you by telling you what these things mean to you, how they will feel, and what you will need to get done. A good dentist is going to allow you to help yourself by showing you what types of services you should be getting, and referring you to places where you can get these things done.

One of the most important traits that a good dentist has is that they are going to be knowledgeable. This is one of the things that you should be looking for as you are working with various types of dentists and seeing what they have to offer to you. When you are dealing with various types of dentists, something that you want to keep in mind is going to be that when you are visiting a dentist, they know what they are talking about.

There are many different facets to being a knowledgeable dentist, and it is important that the one you have is following them all. First of all, the dentist needs to have a degree from an accredited university to show that they have passed through all of the classes that were needed to become a dentist, and that they know what they are doing. Secondly, however, the dentist should have more than that. They should have had a love for teeth and for dental work for a long time. They should be looking at the various ways that they are working with teeth from the time that they start school, and they should be doing all that they can to explore those interests ahead of time. A good dentist is going to be able to be someone who really knows what they are talking about and who really understands the concepts behind what they need to do. A good dentist is also going to be involved in many activities that deal with teeth and with mouths for quite some time before they go to school. This is all part of the knowledge that they should have going into practice.

However, having a dentist that has knowledge is much more than just having a dentist that has gone to dental school. A dentist that has knowledge is also going to have had a lot of experience. Experience means that they will have been working for quite some time at being a dentist, and that they have had many patients before you. They should have some good experience under their belt, so that when they are working with you, you can know that they know what they are doing.

Education and experience are the two main things that must come together in order to have a dentist who really knows what they are doing. This is one of the most important factors in choosing a dentist, because you want to be absolutely sure that the dentist you have chosen is going to understand what they are doing and know what they should be doing as well. This is something that you want to be sure of, because you do not want to choose a dentist who doesn’t know what they are doing.

When you go to meet with your dentist, be sure to ask him or her about his or her education and the experience that they have had. This will be a great way for you to get a good idea about where they have been and what they have been involved with.

When you are looking for a dentist, there are several main criteria that you want to be sure you are finding. It is important for you to choose a dentist who meets these criteria, because choosing a dentist is something that might seem a little stressful to you. You want to be sure that you have picked the best dentist, however, the one that is going to give you the best care and the best treatment so that your teeth will last as long as you do. Choosing a dentist can be easy, if you make sure that you are following some good guidelines and if you make sure that you have made a good decision when it comes to the dentists that you would like to pick.

First of all, a dentist should be kind and caring. This is something that many people might scoff at, but it is one of the biggest reasons for you to choose one dentist over the other. Being kind and caring is something that is easy to overlook when it comes to being na dentist, because they are often known for being rough and tough.

Part of the reason that some people don’t go to the dentist as much as they should is that the just don’t like dentists and don’t like what they are doing, so they avoid going to a dentist for as long as they can. This is something that ends up causing more problems because then their teeth get worse and they aren’t able to have the type of life that they would like to have. Therefore, you don’t want to avoid the dentist, if you can help it. You want to find a good dentist and make sure that you are going to it as often as you need to – which will help you be sure that you are healthy.

Finding a dentist that is kind and caring is one of the best ways to make sure that you have a good dentist. When it comes right down to it, a dentist is going to be working inside of your mouth – inside of your body .They are going to be very close to you, and they are going to be working with you in a few ways that might end up causing you pain the long run. Therefore, something that you want to be sure of is that you are looking at a dentist that is going to help you avoid as much pain as you can by being kind and caring.

You also want a dentist who is kind and caring because they are going to take the time to get to know you as a person and are going to be less likely to ask you to have things done that you don’t really need. Having a good dentist means having one that you can trust, and someone who is kind and caring is going to be someone that you can really trust.

Although there are many practicing dentists but you have to focus on the right one for yourself. Of course there is no perfect dentist but by focusing on your needs you can find the right one.

There are certain things that can help you to determine whether a dentist is good enough for you or not. Here is a look at things that help you choose a good dentist.

1. The dentist you choose should be good enough to look at your problem as something more than a professional duty. He or she should have a genuine interest in preserving your dental health.

2. Most of the dentists make it a point to prescribe some expensive treatments or surgeries, so as to earn money. However you should see to it that the dentist you choose should be the one who tells you of ways to prevent any major dental problems.

3. As with the surgeries, many dentists these days stress on getting an x-ray done for the heck of it. Sometimes they even shun the x rays taken just a few days back. Well actually a good dentist should not do that.

4. The dentist you choose should be known for performing a proper dental examination. He or she should inspect your teeth, your tongue, your gums as well as your lips. Also he or she should examine your palate and inside of your cheek. The dentist should also check your neck for any abnormality in lymph nodes and your thyroid gland for any sort of enlargement.

5. The dentist in question should not be lazy. He or she should actually chart all of his or her findings in full detail.

6. The dentist you choose should do a satisfactory job. He or she should be meticulous in doing his dental work. The dentist in question should not treat you like a product on an assembly line. The dentist should assess you situation properly and should treat it as such. Such a dental work will take care of your problems for a long time on the other hand a low-quality work can actually lead to similar problems in a few weeks time.

Look for these things in the dentist you choose. This way you will be able to get the right dentist for yourself who can help you to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Dentists stopped being tooth pullers long ago. With all the different advances today in dentistry, there are many new facets of the field. Cosmetic dentistry is something that did not exist a few years ago. You may be confused between the cosmetic dentist and a general dentist. Let’s take a look at what a general dentist does.

The general dentist deals with what it sounds like. He deals with general issues regarding your teeth. This is the oral professional that deals with most of the problems. They have training and specialize in the techniques to ensure proper oral hygiene. They clean your teeth and repair them and helped intervene to prevent dental loss and potential gum damage. For many people this is the only kind of dentist they will ever see.

As opposed to the cosmetic dentist whose primary focus is to do the things that make your teeth look perfect and great, your general dentist is focusing on making sure that you have great chops to eat your food with and that you don’t get periodontal disease.

One of the biggest things a dentist deals with is cavities. With tooth decay, the general dentist is the one that will remove the bad tissue, take away the damaged enamel, clean the area, and then fill it with either metal or porcelain.

The dentist or general dentist will also deal with things like root canals. If you have an inflamed nerve or potential decay that is not repairable, the general dentist is the one that will remove that nerve and then ultimately the tooth if necessary.

Your general dentists does other tooth repair like handling a loose filling or reshaping a broken tooth.

And, don’t forget the regular checkups. Your dentist is the one that you visit to get your teeth cleaned and polished, and also the one that takes the x-rays to make sure that the overall health of your teeth and your gums are the way they should be. You may remember getting fluoride treatments when you were younger.

Finding a great and general dentist is a process that can take some time and referrals typically are what you’re looking for. Find a dentist that has a great rapport and wanted you so comfortable with. If you are looking for other than regular dentistry, your dentist may actually be able to perform the procedure, as there are much more cross over in industry these days. For things like porcelain veneers, lumineers, or bleaching, you may need to seek the expertise of the cosmetic dentist. In another article, we will be discussing what the cosmetic dentist specializes in.

The step-by-step process involved in choosing a dentist does not have to be a difficult one, but it is a little more involved than simply choosing the first dentist’s name in the phone book. The same goes for acting purely on a recommendation. Just because a dentist has worked out well for someone else does not mean she will be the best dentist for you.

If you are looking for a dentist because you need assistance with porcelain veneers or other specialty cosmetic dentistry, then it is especially vital that you find not only the right dentist for the job, but also one that you feel comfortable with. So when it comes to choosing the right dentist, or the right cosmetic dentistry service in your area, keep in mind the following important considerations that you should put thought into.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Dentist

1) Although dentistry is not naturally a competitive industry, a dentist in Chicago or other city may feel compelled to attempt luring you in for your business. While being wanted is a nice feeling, it is imperative that you make sure that you are receiving the truth and that your dentist is honest.

2) The more you know about dentistry, the more you will be able to protect yourself, ensuring that you only receive treatments and products that you actually need, rather than unwanted or unnecessary tests and treatments that crop up as a means of padding the bill. It will also help to know a thing or two about the schools and educational history a dentist should have. This way you can make sure that any dentist you work with is actually certified and has a background that checks out.

Choosing The Wrong Dentist

Choosing the wrong dentist is not necessarily going to expose you to anything dangerous, but what it may mean is that you end up being worked on by someone you do not feel comfortable with. Many people are naturally uncomfortable with many dental procedures and it is important to choose a dentist with whom you feel the most comfortable. For example, Chicago porcelain veneers require a lengthy process and the more comfortable you are with the dentist, the more smoothly the entire process will go.

Choosing the right dentist has a lot to do with feeling more comfortable when you are being worked on, without feeling stressed that you will be overcharged, under medicated or otherwise put in any sort of risk. Choosing a dentist is not difficult, but it is an important decision that you need to make if you want high quality dentistry work with a dentist that you feel completely at ease with at all times.

A family dentist can have a long-standing relationship with a patient. They work with all ages and can provide a stable source for your dental care. When you find a good family dentist, you’ll want to stick with him or her for as long as is possible. A bad dentist can cause a lot of unnecessary pain and discomfort. You should make sure that your family dentist meets your needs before making a commitment.

Different people have different needs when deciding on a family dentist. For example, are you more comfortable with a male or a female. The first thing you have to consider is your insurance situation. If you have dental insurance, you must find someone who is a provider. An out of network provider can cost a large amount of extra money. Plus, you don’t want to get attached to a family dentist who turns out not to be in your insurance network.

If you do not have dental insurance, you’ll want to consider price. If you have to pay full price, then an expensive family dentist might put you into unnecessary debt. Of course, as with all things, you get what you pay for. You’ll want to make sure that you can not only afford it, but that you are getting the best dentist for your money.

Ideally, you should find a family dentist through other friends and family members. That way, you can get an honest opinion from someone you trust. You can find a dentist who causes minimal pain and doesn’t perform unnecessary procedures. However, if you do not have any friends or family in the area yet, you should do some online research. Clearly, there will be a lot of options. The sheer number of dentists in your area will probably be staggering. If you search online, you might find some patient reviews. This will give you an idea of what you can expect.

Most people don’t enjoy going to the dentist. It can be a painful and uncomfortable process. It is better to find your family dentist when you are in need of a routine cleaning than when you need a root canal. If you are comfortable with your dentist, then when you are in need of a more serious procedure you’ll be all right with him or her performing it. It is ideal to stick with the same family dentist for as long as possible. You can bring in your spouse, your kids and other family members. It makes your life easier to know that when something goes wrong, there is a dentist you can count on. Nervousness at the dentist can make a procedure even more uncomfortable than it needs to be. If you are comfortable with your dentist, it can make things much easier on you.

Finding a dentist can be a difficult process. You owe yourself the benefit of good research. It is all right to switch to another dentist if you are not completely comfortable with the first one you find. A good dentist can be a lifelong relationship that can make your life easier.

Finding a dentist that you are comfortable with and one that fits your needs professionally and financially is an important component of your overall health plan. Below are some simple steps that will help you find the perfect dentist, and get you on the path toward maintaining proper oral health.

1. First, contact your state or local dental association for a referral of a dentist near you (or if you are moving, ask your previous dentist if they can provide a referral).

2. Visit www.ada.org to see if your dentist is an American Dental Association member. Obviously, dentists do not have to be members of the ADA to be good, but the ADA helps keep dentists up-to-date with any advancement in the industry. The ADA also ensures that its members follow their mission to commit to ‘the public’s oral health, ethics, science and professional advancement’.

3. Check to see if your health plan covers the dentist and ask for information about the fees and expected methods of payment. Be sure that you receive estimates for procedures such as full-mouth x-rays, missed appointments, and preventative dental visits that include an oral exam and tooth cleaning.

o If payment plans are necessary, make sure the dentist will work with you. Also, make sure you receive information and understand the fees associated with any work before the treatment is performed.

4. Shop around! With your money and your mouth at stake, it’s your right (and duty!) to comparison shop for dentists with regard to pricing, location, and reputation.

5. If possible, visit the office prior to making an appointment. When choosing the location, consider the following:

o Is the office easy to get to from your home or job? Is the appointment schedule convenient for you? Remember, you are choosing your dentist so your convenience is paramount. Also, keep in mind that a hassle free drive will help ensure that missed appointments are kept to a minimum and will make oral care easier to fit into your work and home life routines.

o Is the office clean and orderly? Ask about the sterilization procedures for the instruments. A clean office also shows a manner of professionalism and ensures that the dentist takes the correct precautions in ensuring health and safety.

6. Talk to the dentist about your oral history (* your previous dentist is required by law to provide you a copy of your dental records, so make sure you ask for them if the dentist does not offer!). Make sure you feel comfortable consulting with your new dentist and he/she explains preventative measures and treatments in a way that you understand. If you feel pressured into a procedure or the dentist does not offer to explain preventative measures, then maybe this dentist isn’t the right choice for you!

7. Check whether or not the dentist provides after-hours and emergency care. Most dentists do provide this service, but there may be added fees involved. Be sure to find out ahead of time about additional fees for emergency procedures so that you won’t have financial pain in addition to mouth pain!

8. Make sure your dentist prioritizes a treatment schedule distinguishing problems that need attention immediately and those that are not as urgent. Remember, it is not only your responsibility but also your right to ask questions. Make certain that you understand all of the fees involved, and why a procedure may be necessary; before making a decision!

You can also contact the national Oral Health Information Clearinghouse for more useful information on dentists and dentistry. If you are handicapped, you can contact the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped for assistance.

If you are looking for a good dentist, a look into the yellow pages will help you to find the dentists who are available in your area, especially if you are new there and do not know anyone to recommend a dentist. Hence, the first thing for you to do is to make a list of possible candidates by checking out the yellow pages and advertisements, talking to the local hospitals, visiting websites of dental schools or just going through the phone book. But in order to find out how good he is, there are some simple steps which you can follow.

The simplest way to find a good dentist in your area is by word of mouth. Just ask family, friends, colleagues and neighbors about their dentist, or ask them whether they are familiar with any of the names that you have already collected. You should immediately get all the details that you require: whether they are satisfied with his treatment, the dentist’s personality, his fees, and the atmosphere in his office and if you want to take your children to him, whether he is a kid-friendly dentist.

In this way it is possible that you may collect a few references. You can also find out whether the dentist accepts your insurance. Find out too about how easy it is to get an appointment. Even your insurance company may have a personalized list of dentists in your area from which you can choose.

If you do not find any recommendations from friends or neighbors, it is advisable to visit any local health care facility or the local hospital where a dentist is available. Also, if you are moving from one part of the city to another or to another city, you can ask your current dentist to recommend a dentist in your new area or city.

The best way to decide on the choice of your dentist is to talk to the current patients. If you have received a recommendation through a hospital or a health care center, you can still ask for a patient referral and find out what they think about the dentist.

Look out for the professional qualifications of the dentist and also the availability of emergency care during office hours, at night or on a weekend. Last but not least, your personal comfort with the dentist is important, because he should explain the procedures to you, should answer all your questions and you should feel comfortable to explain your pain, fear and anxiety to the dentist at all times.

Dentophobia means fear of the dentist or of dental procedures. The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) doesn’t maintain data on dentophobia. However, a 2005 national study conducted by University of Toronto researchers determined that over 16% of Canadians suffer from dental fear, and 7.6% are so fearful that they postpone or avoid treatment altogether.

Why do people fear the dentist?

Most people have some reason for their fear. Many have had a previous negative experience in a dental office, such as:

· Gagging during x-rays

· Hearing screaming while in the waiting room

· Incompetent dentists (not enough training in a procedure)

· Invasion of people’s personal space

· Loss of control of the situation

· Uncaring dentists (poor chairside manner)

· Unskilled dentists (not enough artistic or aesthetic ability)

· Insufficient anesthetic being given

People may also fear things typically associated with dentists like injections (needles) and drills. Trips to the dentist may cause some additional financial strain or loss of work time. Interestingly, Dr. Mark Slovin, an American specialist in dental anxiety, notes that fear of the dentist tends to run in families, which suggests that it is learned from parents.

Historically, dentistry and the attitudes surrounding it have changed enormously in recent years. Our grandparents typically took a “no pain, no gain” approach and expected to be in pain at their dentist’s office. Correspondingly, dentists used to be accustomed to causing a certain amount of pain. This has all changed.

Solutions to fear of the dentist

Modern dentistry tends to be a lot more sensitive to people’s fear and anxiety, and many dentists offer sedatives as well as local anesthetic. Technology has improved, patient education is more important, dental offices are often far more pleasant and comfortable, and lasers and computers have speeded up most procedures and reduced pain and noise. We can now take for granted:

· Dentists who listen to questions and answer them honestly

· Dentists who care about how we feel

· Better dentist education, including ongoing training

· Face-to-face communication

· Better patient education about their treatments so they are prepared

· More pain-free treatments due to today’s anesthetics and laser technology

· TV in the treatment rooms, movies on ceiling screens, and many music DVDs to listen to on headphones during treatments

· Sedation dentistry and even sleep dentistry in some facilities

· Extra anesthetic given if the original amount turns out to be insufficient

· In cosmetic dental offices: blankets, neck pillows, paraffin wax hand treatments, warm towels, refreshment bars, and other spa-like pampering

What can we ourselves do?

1. We can make dental visits be only for check-ups and cleaning, by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush and floss regularly and do what the dentist or hygienist recommends, e.g. use soft brushes, floss the right way etc. That would make dental work unnecessary. There need be no gum disease treatment, fillings, crowns, etc. because our natural teeth are remaining strong and healthy.

2. We can choose a dentist who has up-to-date equipment and attitudes. There is equipment that detects decay extremely early, making the necessary filling very small and easy. Lasers, dental anesthetic swabs, oral sedation – these things reduce or eliminate pain and reduce anxiety.

3. Explain your fears to your dentist. The biggest solution to dental fear is trust in your dentist.

Going to see the dentist usually is not one of peoples favorite ways to spend a bit of free time, but the visits are indeed necessary. Many people may think that since they brush their teeth and floss, and they feel no pain or discomfort when chewing, they must not need to go see a dentist. However, a dentist can do a lot more for you than just fix cavities and clean your teeth. There are tons of benefits that go along with seeing your neighborhood dentist, and here are just ten of those reasons.

#10: Invisalign straightening systems. For those of us who have been told that braces are needed, the Invisalign system is a clear alternative to the traditional metal braces and the jabbing hardware that comes with them.

#9: Preventive services. A dentist has the know how and the tools to clean your teeth better than we could ever do at home. While daily maintenance is important, seeing the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup will ensure that your daily efforts are not going to waste.

#8: Cosmetic repairs. Lets face it, accidents happen, and many people wind up somehow with a chipped or broken tooth here or there. Your dentist can repair your damaged tooth so that it looks just as it should, and other people will be none the wiser to it.

#7: Whitening treatments. Over time, it seems no matter how many times a day we brush our teeth with whitening toothpaste, age has a way of showing up on our teeth. The dentist has an array of whitening systems and products to bring back your bright smile, helping you look 10 years younger, instantly.

#6: Veneers. These little babies are lifesavers when it comes to saving your teeth, filling in gaps, and replacing worn or damaged teeth. Your dentist will know if veneers are the right choice for improving your smile or not.

#5: Gum disease therapy. Yes, these days even our gums need a little therapy now and then to stay healthy. Your favorite dentist knows all there is to know about your gums, and can help you with any gum disease or loss of tissue you may be experiencing.

#4: A Smile analysis. Looking at the shape and size of your smile, along with the condition of your teeth and your smile line, a dentist can offer suggestions and solutions to improve your smile that you may not have even known were possible.

#3: Cosmetic consultations. From taking diagnostic pictures to using digital photography to show you before and after potential results, a dentist will make you feel confident and safe and offer tips while you are thinking of having a cosmetic improvement done.

#2: Cavity repair. Cavities happen, almost to everyone at some point in their life. If the cavity is caught early, the damage will be minimal and relatively easy to fix. A dentist is a pro at finding the tiny cavities that are just starting out, and can also do some major work on the cavities that have been there a little too long, saving your tooth and saving you a root canal.

And the #1 reason to love your dentist: Nitrous Oxide. Otherwise known as laughing gas, sometimes it is the best thing to look forward to when you walk in those doors to the dentists office. Everybody loves the laughing gas.

So there you have it, ten great reasons to love your dentist. Do yourself and your mouth a favor and call your dentist for an appointment today, whether it is for a cleaning, a cosmetic consultation, or for the laughing gas. Any way you slice it, a dentist is your teeths best friend.

Taking good care of our teeth is hygienic. The mouth is actually home to thousands of harmful bacteria and if you do not have your teeth cleaned and checked professionally, you could be prone to oral bacteria-related illnesses. Many people think that brushing their teeth is enough.

Unfortunately, health experts believe that a person should visit a dentist at least twice a year to get their teeth cleaned professionally and checked as well for repair works. This will ensure that all cavities are removed and tooth decay is prevented.

Despite the importance of going to the dentist, there are still many people who avoid going to the dentist. These people maybe suffering from fear of the dentist. Although it may sound a bit funny, majority of these people are full-grown adults. When asked why they are afraid of dentists, they would probably not know the reason why. Their fear stems from an illogical belief that a trip to the dentist would mean hours of discomfort and pain.

This belief can be blamed on the bad reputations that dentists have earned during the old times. But there is nothing to fear from dentists today. These dentists are well-trained and use the latest technology. A trip to the dentist is actually comfortable and pain-free.

Your fear of the dentist can be overcome by going to the dentist and seeing for yourself how times have changed. Look for a dentist that you will feel comfortable with if you want. You can also ask your friends and colleagues for referrals if you want to look for great dentists.

Deciding to go to the dentist is a big step for you. If you still feel a bit queasy, you should try some relaxation exercises which could relieve some of the anxiety you are feeling. You can try breathing deeply as well as stretching to remove muscle tension. Since you will be lying down with your mouth open most of the time, you might feel more comfortable if you know what’s going on. Ask your dentist for a small mirror, which you can use.

If you are suffering from intense fear of the dentist, you can try behavior-altering methods such as hypnotherapy. Considered to be an effective treatment for phobias and addictions, hypnotherapy targets the subconscious, which is more receptive to suggestions. After a single session, you will immediately observe its positive effects. In no time at all, you would be able to go to the dentist without feeling faint, anxious or nervous.

It is important to many individuals to have a gentle dentist, especially when a sensitive mouth is involved. Then there is that strange fear of the dentist because the mouth is a sensitive place. The mouth is so sensitive that sometimes activities such as flossing can make the gums bleed or inflict pain. We are more comfortable with having control over our toothbrushes rather than having someone else place strange objects into our mouths. However, the key to good oral hygiene is seeing a dentist twice per year.

But is it possible to have a gentle dentist? Of course it is. It is important for you to set aside past experiences and be proactive in finding a dentist who is going to have your best interest at heart. That isn’t saying that past dentists haven’t had your best interest at heart. That’s just saying that some dentists are gentler than others and you are one of those seeking out the more gentle ones.

What to do

The first thing you want to do is ask around. You have friends who go to the dentist regularly and you want to see what they have to say about their own dentists. Chances are they have been to a dentist in the past that was not so gentle, so they’re going to tell you about it. If they like their current dentist, then they’re going to tell you about that too. So be sure to listen to what others have to say about dentists they have visited. If you have to, make notes about which ones to stay away from and which ones are considered gentle. You can then compare what everyone has to say and make a decision after that.

After you have made a decision regarding which dentist to see, schedule an appointment for a simple cleaning. You can tell if a dentist is a gentle dentist just by how the cleaning is done. If they seem in a hurry and you’re feeling pain, then you know that the dentist is not gentle and that you never want to embark on that particular journey again. You then you know that you need to try another dentist in six months. You can keep doing this until you find one to be your regular dentists. If you find that you have cavities that need filled or need another dental procedure, it may be a good idea to seek out another dentist if the one you tried was not so gentle. This may cost you a little more money, but you need to make an appointment with another dentist and consult with them. They will look at your teeth to see what is going on. This is also a way in which you can tell how gentle they are. You can also ask questions such as:

- Do you do the procedure yourself or does someone do it for you?

- Do you apply a numbing gel to the area in which Novocain shots will be administered?

If someone other than the dentist is doing the procedure, then that is a red flag because you don’t know that person. The second question is also important because a gentle dentist will ensure that you will feel as little as possible.

It pays off

Embarking on a search for a gentle dentist is going to pay off because you’re going to be able to have dental work done with minimal pain. No one wants to have a procedure done and then feel it for two weeks. A gentle dentist is going to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible, which is what a dentist should do.
